The Annual Serpentine Swimming Club Christmas Party took place once again at Imperial College Sport Centre in Princes Gardens.  Many members contributed to the music, acting, sketches and jokes.  A great night was had by all.

Saturday 20th December 2003

Saturday 6th December 2003

Bill Deeley finds a rather large dead fish floating in the Serps with its head missing; obviously bitten off by an even larger fish!!!  Jamie our resident photographer decided it was time to finally go for a swim, after watching the members for the past two months.

Saturday 29th November 2003

Norman Jones persuaded some of the Imperial College swimming team to come down and try the Serpentine waters.  Nick Adams bought his very sweet new puppy down to "play" with the swans!

Saturday 1st November 2003

The Winter Series kicked off on a fine Saturday morning.  The water was 44oF and we had a huge turnout of swimmers, well over thirty!  There were 4 races and everyone seemed to enjoy the swim.  Robin had a particularily cruel handicap and didn't stand a chance.  Neil Price was suffering from a self-inflicted evening injury and swam dreadfully to come in last in his race.  Bill Deeley actually tried to win his race but was just beaten at the line into second.  There were a few first timers, so well done to them.  We had our resident photographer Jamie out in the lake in waders taking photos, poor girl must have felt the cold!

Monday 27th October 2003

The annual gala between the Serpentine Swimming Club and the South London Swimming Club was held from 8pm at the Clapham Manor Street sports centre.  The competition was fierce, and the Serpentine produced a very strong and full team, but to our surprise the gala was announced to be a draw with both teams scoring 79 points!  There were some quality swims from lots of our swimmers; some notable efforts from Clair Wilmans in the backstroke, Geoff Ransom in the fly, Robin Hunter-Coddington in the breast (25 secs for 33m), Neil Price in the doggy-paddle and some gutsy swims from Norman Jones.  Well done to all our swimmers.

As usual Reney from the South London Swimming Club, produced a marvellous spread of food and drinks which was enjoyed by everyone.  She is pictured below in the penultimate photo.  I would like to offer her the thanks of the Serps swimmers.

Better luck next time chaps!

Saturday 18th October 2003

Bunny Schendler came to present the prizes and silverware for the Louis Schendler Bowl. Yoko Reid stormed home first in the 100 yard race, closely followed by Martin and then Laura Moffat. The water was 49oF and it was rather colder out of the water.

Club swimmers were reminded of the swimming gala against the South London Swimming Club on Monday 27th October at 7:30pm in the Clapham Manor Swimming Pool. We need a strong team to retain the cup.

Saturday 11th October 2003

In the 200 yard Ron Hamil Cup, sponsored by Norman Jones the first three places were taken by:  1st Wayne Ashpole,  2nd Tony Cuthbert , 3rd Yureko.  The water was 52 oC and there was not a cloud to be seen in the sky, a perfect Autumn morning.  There was much moaning that Mark Fleet was working on his mark by doing breaststroke for the last 110 yards, the Handicapper was duly informed!

Saturday 4th October 2003

Edward Leigh MP wins the Cyril Wood Cup.  The race was 200 yards, and the water temperature was 56 oC.  Second swimmer home was Norman Saxby, closely followed by Eric Carter.

Saturday 20th September 2003

The Annual Club Biathlon took place where members of the Serpentine Running Club join the swimmers for a 2 mile run around the lake followed by a 400 yard swim.  There are cups for the winning man and winning woman.  There is also a competition to see if the Runners or Swimmers win as a team.

This year Andrew Davis of the Running Club won, followed closely by 2 swimmers; Neil Price (2nd) and Mark Fleet (3rd).   The first woman home was Sakura.  The Running Club accumulated more points and defeated the Swimming Club.

Saturday 13th September 2003

Mark Fleet wins the All Clothes Race, narrowly beating Neil Price.  The water was 60oF, and the sun was shining.

Wednesday 25th December 2002

Nick Adams won the 139th Annual Christmas Day race and is presented with the Peter Pan cup by the Greenbury family.  He completed the course in a new club record of 57 seconds.  Yoko Reed was the second swimmer home and the first woman and was awarded the Wendy Cup.

There were around 40 swimmers participating in the race, and several hundred watching.  The water was a balmy 42oF, and the air temperature was very mild.  Tony Cuthbert kindly supplied vast amounts of alcohol (port and brandy concoction) that was enjoyed by all the swimmers.  Well done to all that swam or watched.

Saturday 21st December 2002

Bill Phipps wins the Winter Series.  There were 5 swimmers that each had accumulated 25 points over the series and were in the running for the Cup.  The prizes were presented by Bob Kelly.
